Hunting plays a major part in the economy in all of Colorado, but in particular in Northwest Colorado. The region attracts approximately 28,000 hunters annually.
During hunting season, the property is full to capacity with sportsman who come to chase big game. Much of this is public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) and the Colorado Division of Wildlife (DOW). Licenses for deer and elk in prime hunting locations are awarded by a lottery system. Resident and non-resident hunters alike must apply for deer tags.
Over the years, the Recreation District has expanded its activities to include Septemberfest, a spectacular 4th of July fireworks show over Kenney Reservoir, Christmasfest, and many park events throughout the year. They also own, operate and maintain Elks Park – which includes the Kevin Poole baseball fields, Cedar Ridge Golf Course, a riverside Camper Park and Main Street's Hefley Park.
